The refilling of private swimming pools on the Costa del Sol authorised as of June

  • The request made by the public company Acosol to the Drought Management Commission has been accepted
  • Water consumption per inhabitant per day has also been increased to 225 litres
  • La situación de sequía ha pasado de grave a severa, de ahí el permiso ahora de rellenar las piscinas privadas.

They can be refilled as long as they have a water recirculation system to use the minimum amount

The Drought Management Commission of the Junta de Andalucía has accepted the exceptional request made by the public company Acosol which will allow the refilling of private pools in the eleven municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, after the declaration of drought in the region was changed from serious to severe. The measure will come into force from June 1st.

After the rains caused by the Nelson squall, the Concepción reservoir is currently at 75 percent of its capacity, changing the scenario for the Costa del Sol for this summer and increasing water consumption per inhabitant per day to 225 litres.

Swimming pools, irrigation and use of showers

In relation to the refilling of swimming pools from June onwards, the Junta points out that these must have a compulsory water recirculation system to use the minimum amount of water, guaranteeing the refilling of any losses that may occur due to evaporation or filter cleaning.

On the use of water for irrigation, the Andalusian Government has exceptionally authorised, following a request submitted by Acosol, an increase in the maximum amount of water to be used for irrigating green areas when there are species of special botanical interest and there is no regenerated or phreatic water available. Specifically, the Drought Management Commission of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins has given the green light to increase this allocation from 200 m3 to 400 m3 per hectare per month in order to cover survival irrigation, but establishing a maximum of just one irrigation per week.

Finally, Acosol's request for the use of showers in sports facilities and swimming pools, and those reserved on beaches for people with reduced mobility, was also approved.
