Álvaro Moreno, David Marín, David Sánchez, Alberto Sánchez and Juan José González were sworn in on Thursday 25th at midday in Mijas Town Hall. These five firefighters will reinforce the staff of the Fire and Rescue Service (SEIS) of Mijas, which will now have 36 firefighters.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), led the swearing-in ceremony, accompanied by the first deputy mayor and councillor for Security in Mijas Town Hall, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), as well as the deputy chief officer of Mijas Fire Department, Francisco M. Mérida and the SEIS sergeant, Manuel Morales. “We are in luck here in Mijas, we have five people with a very strong vocation and with a lot of enthusiasm and desire to work for each and every one of the people in Mijas. All of them have gone through an important preparation process to be able to get the position that from now on they are going to develop in our municipality as public servants”, declared the mayoress.

For his part, Cuevas Dawson said he was very moved “to see the parents excited” and praised the work they will be doing in the fire brigade, “we should be very proud of all of them, because they are people who give their lives to save other people's lives, it is a wonderful thing and I would like to congratulate them because it is a lifetime job”.

A new thrilling era

Accompanied by their families, they were all very excited about this new era they are facing, after completing the public examination and the 400-hour training course. “For me it is a great personal achievement, because I have made many years of sacrifice, but it was worth it because the profession is worth it. The selection process for firefighters is always hard, but in this case I was lucky and I passed the competition”, said Alberto Sánchez.

For David Sánchez, it is an “emotional release” as he started on this path when he was 19 years old, after working temporarily for the Seville Provincial Council, "always with the concern to keep on preparing yourself and applying to get a place”.David's girlfriend, Cristina Ruiz, declared that “today is one of the happiest days of our lives, he wanted to be a fireman since he was 19 and finally he did it and I am very happy”.

The mayoress emphasised the importance of increasing the Fire Department's personnel, “as it gives us greater peace of mind when facing any dangerous situation”. At the same time, she asked the citizens to cooperate to prevent further incidents, “as we have had some sad episodes in Mijas”. For his part, the councillor for Security emphasised that budget modifications have been made “to continue bringing in new equipment such as a rescue mattress, we have already obtained the release equipment and also a rescue raft”. Finally, he assured that they are working on a new project for the Fire Station: “There was one, but its cost, 9 million euros, seems to me an outrage. Our new councillor, Francisco Jerez, will be in charge of this issue, he will make a detailed study of the needs”.
