On Tuesday 27th, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), expressed her concern about the slow progress, she said, of the extension works on the Las Lagunas Sports Complex, which should be finished in May but which, she stressed, are very unlikely to be completed. As the mayoress recalled, the extension of these sports facilities was announced in 2018, with work beginning the following year. The non-compliance of the first contractor forced the works to be put out to tender again and now it is a joint venture between ACP and ASCH Infraestructuras, although it is not proving easy to execute, explained Mata, “because apparently problems have arisen when transporting the roof and the area in which the Sports City is located is complicated to cut off traffic and so on”. 

The UTE’s plan was to finish this extension next May, but at the rate at which the works are progressing, this is unlikely, acknowledged Mata, which is why the government team has called a meeting with those responsible for the works for next week. Another of the causes that may have led to the delay is the increase in prices and the lack of materials, as a result of the war in Ukraine, said the mayoress, “and that apparently there are not many who want to carry out this type of work. We can understand all these issues, but we are concerned that this whole process is dragging on for six years. 

Mata also said she was aware of the inconvenience that these works are causing for the people who come to the Sports City every day to practise sports or other activities. “We may have to demand that work also be carried out on Saturdays so that the construction  progresses at a good pace, but we will talk about all of this next week with the companies that represent the UTE and will see what is signed in the contract and, depending on what it says, we will demand one measure or another”, she concluded.
