Ecologists in Action asks to revoke the hiring of archers for the control of wild boars

  • The group demands the council to promote other methods such as "traps or fences"
  • Entre otras acciones, Ecologistas en Acción aboga por la esterilización de los jabalíes para evitar su proliferación.

The Environment Department assures that the measure was included in "a specific emergency plan" and "was deactivated at the beginning of February"

Mijas Ecologists in Action demands that the Mijas' Environmental Department "revoke the contracting of archers to hunt wild boar in the municipality and promote alternative measures". In the document sent to the area, the group expresses its " absolute opposition" to this system, pointing out that "the suffering of an animal the size of the wild boar, wounded with an arrow, is very high, much more than a shot with a bullet". Furthermore, they add that "a wild boar slightly wounded with an arrow can be very dangerous, due to the stress generated and the nature and corpulence of the animal, making it a potential danger to people living in the area".

Mijas Ecologists in Action recommend other methods such as "traps or fences". The group advocates "prevention rather than control or intervention", and therefore asks the Town Hall to implement "passive control methods, ranging from milestones and odoriferous signs to electric shepherds or sterilisation of the animals". It also insists on "greater preventive and punitive control to prevent people from feeding wild boars or creating feeding troughs in their own interests and thus avoid an increase in the population" and, it adds, "control of the use of snares, a prohibited method that has already appeared in some rural areas".

A one-off measure authorised by the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government)

The Department of the Environment assures that the use of archers was included in a "specific emergency plan", which was resorted to after a report from the security forces and bodies, and it was deactivated more than two weeks ago. According to the councillor for the area, Marco Cortés (PP), "the local police received numerous warnings about the appearance of these animals at points such as the main road, where traffic had to be stopped, and around children's playgrounds". In addition to these incidents, they point out, there has been material damage to public and private property, as well as "cases of attacks on people and other animals". Municipal sources insist that the measure "was authorised by the Junta de Andalucía" and carried out by "professionals from official hunting groups".
