The Mijas Town Hall has allocated 19 million euros in the 2024 budget for the Department for Infrastructure, Works, New Technologies and Energy Efficiency. The councillor responsible for the same, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), has detailed the main items that these delegations have.
Firstly, the councillor recalled that the current government team "made a commitment on November 2nd 2023 to have the much needed and obligatory Budget for our municipality before the end of the year and we have done so", stressing, moreover, that the needs of a municipality like Mijas "could not continue to be covered with extensions of an outdated budget".
The councillor has broken down the main amounts of the department, with 15 million euros for infrastructures, 1.5 million for new technologies and digital modernisation and 2.4 million euros for the management of facilities, mainly in the field of energy efficiency.
However, the councillor stressed that "our government team does not sell smoke", and that all work begins with preliminary studies that include the drafting of projects, permits and authorisations from other administrations, as well as tendering and awarding. That is why many infrastructure items are earmarked for drafting projects, prior to the execution of works, "so that citizens can finally see the result". He also pointed out that the aim is for all these drafts to be ready in the first half of the year so that they can be put out to tender as soon as possible.
Mijas Pueblo
These budgets include projects considered key by the government team in terms of infrastructure, including the extension of the Mijas Pueblo car park, "a priority for this area due to the lack of parking spaces". He explained that the most beneficial option for the municipality is being studied from among the three possible choices: extension of the current car park building to the south; extension to the north, each with around 500 spaces. And another possible car park in the Barrio de Santana area.
Also included is the project to fully recover the original appearance of La Puente and thus reinforce the character of Mijas Pueblo as a historic-artistic site; the stabilisation of slopes in El Compás and La Muralla, the reform of the Folk Museum and the extension of the Town Hall. In addition, the project for a new nature trail running from the Lagarejo area to the Fuente de la Seda and the improvement of pedestrian traffic from Puerto de Los Pescadores to Osunillas are also envisaged.
Las Lagunas
In Las Lagunas, the Los Santos car park and the Parque del Ahogadero (also known as Gran Parque de la Costa del Sol) have both been allocated 4.2 million euros for their execution. On the other hand, 150,000 euros will be allocated for the drafting of the project for the new municipal facilities in the Cortijo Don Elías area, which, in addition to the administrative offices, will include spaces for leisure and commercial activity. It also includes the refurbishment of the Islas Marianas roundabout, the new Fire Station and a new municipal building in the María Zambrano park.
To this must be added 100,000 euros for the sanitary improvement infrastructure project, one of the first commitments made by this government team.
La Cala
Finally, in La Cala, the councillor highlighted that the accounts include a budget allocation for the unblocking of the Coastal Path, "a great tourist project for our municipality which cannot be paralysed and for which one million euros will be invested", a sports complex in the area of Cortijo Colorado "which responds to the neighbourhood demand due to the shortage of this type of facilities due to the increase in population in this urban area in recent years and the restoration of the roof of the sports pavilion in La Cala", added the councillor.
Torres Trella also expressed the government team's concern for the water situation in the municipality and the province, which is why they will prioritise actions and projects related to water supply and drainage.
For example, the construction of a drinking water deposit in the northern area of Las Lagunas, the building of a tank where groundwater can be collected in the area around the Juncal car park, and sewage collectors in Carmen Sáenz de Tejada and Alquería, among others.
Residence for the elderly
During his intervention, the councillor wanted to stress that, although certain projects are not included in the current budget, this does not mean that work is not being done on them. Such is the case of the residence for the elderly, on which he recalled that what the previous government team proposed was a "private residence with only eight places for the use of the people of Mijas". In this regard, he stated that this number of places is not enough and that other types of service are being studied in order to work in coordination with the Andalusian Regional Government.
For this reason, Torres Trella reminded that different projects are being studied in order to take them into account for the budget modification in April.
Digital modernisation and facility management
On the other hand, the New Technologies Department has a budget of 1.4 million euros, of which 550,000 euros are earmarked for digital modernisation, which will involve the creation of the electronic file and digital administrative procedures. This is expected to facilitate, accelerate and improve the management, transparency and communication of the Town Hall with citizens.
The aim is to make the municipal administration more agile, for which a calendar of commitments will be put in place so that the Town Hall has a maximum response time to attend to the needs of the citizens.
Finally, for Facilities Management, 2.8 million euros have been allocated: 650,000 euros are earmarked for energy improvements in municipal buildings (air conditioning, ventilation, boilers, security, etc.) and 200,000 euros for photovoltaic installations and charging of electric vehicles.
