El Torreón is preparing the VIII Rice Week

  • The restaurant in La Cala will offer a wide variety of delicious rice dishes from October 30th to November 5th

Tributes are scheduled for Dr Sladana Obradovic on the first day and tennis coaches Paco and Jose Gil on the last day

Rice dishes prepared with the best local produce, washed down with wines from an excellent wine cellar and served by a great team of professionals are what El Torreón Restaurant offers us during its 'Semana del Arroz' (Rice Week), all with magnificent views of the sea. Thanks to this initiative, which is now in its eighth year, from the 30th of October to the 5th of November we will be able to taste a wide variety of exquisite rice dishes, one of the main hallmarks of our cuisine, prepared by Isaac Montiel, head chef of the restaurant in La Cala. "We start with a blind rice, because some foreigners and Spanish people, part of our clientele, prefer not to have to work too hard shelling the sea food while they eat and just want to put their fork in and get on with enjoying the tastes and colours. Then we continue with 'land and sea,' which is a rice dish that includes seafood with shells; then black rice, which is a big hit here in our restaurant; we also have rice in broth, with clams from the Bay of Biscay and with good local produce", explained the chef this Monday at the presentation of the culinary event.

For El Torreón this year is also special, "this year we have celebrated our tenth anniversary at El Torreón", reported the co-owner and manager of the restaurant, Salvador Gallardo, who also said "I want to thank, above all, my staff both in the kitchen and on the floor, for the work they do, as everyone congratulates me, and the key phrase is that the food is very good, but that we also have spectacular staff". For his part, the head chef added that "it is a pleasure for me to have been in charge of this kitchen for 11 years now".

"From here I want to congratulate Salvador and pass it on to his team for the excellent work he has been doing every year, for us as a tourist town, having restaurants that are a reference point from a gastronomic point of view is important," said the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), at the presentation of the VIII Rice Week.

During the week there will be tributes in honour of Dr. Sladana Obradovic and tennis teachers, Paco and José Gil.

Martin also highlighted the people to whom tribute is being paid this year, "this year we have an adopted daughter of our municipality, Dr. Sladana Obradovic, well known by the citizens of Mijas for the excellent work she does in Mijas Pueblo, and two sportsmen who stand out and through sport transmit those values that citizens require, which are the brothers Paco and José Gil".

The tribute to Dr. Saldana Obradovic will take place on the first day of the week, 30th of October", while the lunch dedicated to Paco and José Gil will be on the last day, 5th of November. "I am very grateful and proud to be able to do these little things for La Cala, for Mijas and for El Torreón", said the restaurant manager.
