Now that August has arrived, it is time to look back over the first two months of summer with the lifeguard service provided by Socorrismo Málaga on the beaches of Mijas. The Councillor for Beaches, José Carlos Martín (Cs), and the local coordinator of Socorrismo Málaga, Gonzalo Botta, have taken stock of the work carried out in this area during the months of June and July. In total, "the number of incidents of all kinds has been 6,200. Among them we have ordinances, rescues, salvage, health incidents and, to highlight the most numerous from the point of view of health, injuries and burns, with 384 incidents, followed by jellyfish stings with 262", said Martin. 

In terms of rescues, and in order of importance, there were 28 minor incidents, 7 moderate and none of extreme seriousness. "We have had some difficult interventions but, thanks to the effectiveness and professionalism of the service, we have been able to resolve all the interventions efficiently", said the councillor. 

Zero fatalities

Another important fact to highlight, according to Martín, is that "we continue to have zero fatalities, which is important for us. Today, as has been the case for many years, we continue to keep that number at zero, so I would like to thank once again the magnificent work done by the lifeguard and rescue team in coordination with the Department for Beaches and the Local Police".

On the other hand, Botta wanted to highlight "a serious incident we have had on the beach of El Chaparral, with a kitesurfer who felt unwell in the water. When he came out of the sea, he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, but the rescue team carried out an initial intervention, followed by the medical team. Thanks to the rapid intervention and collaboration of the whole team, his life was saved". The rescue coordinator also expressed his "satisfaction and pride in the way the whole team is working".

Another of the characteristics for which the beaches of Mijas stand out is the quality of their adapted areas for persons with reduced mobility. According to the municipal councillor for Beaches, "we are very satisfied with our adapted beaches, which have also had their facilities modernised this year, so I think we have taken a leap in quality, not only for the service we provide, but also for the conditioning of these four beaches [Chaparral, El Torreón, La Luna and El Bombo]". Offering data on the number of users who have enjoyed these adapted areas, the councillor said that "we have had 500 visits and around 255 have been able to get into the sea during the months of June and July".

Therefore, the first two months of summer on the Mijas coastline resulted in zero fatalities thanks to rescue jetskis, drones, ambulances and, of course, the team of lifeguards, whom the Beaches councillor thanked for the service provided, as well as for their quick response to incidents and "excellent professionalism and results".
