The future Grand Park of the Costa del Sol of Las Lagunas, the important green lung that Mijas will offer the province of Málaga, took the most important step towards becoming a reality on Thursday 3rd of August.
The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), the first deputy mayor and councillor for Infrastructures and Works, José Carlos Martín (Cs), the second deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), and the councillor for Town Planning, Laura Moreno (PSOE), laid the first stone.
This is a milestone which, if everything goes according to plan, will be completed in the first half of 2025 when the work is finished and the inauguration of this green space of nearly 36 hectares will take place, which will become one of the largest in Andalusia.
In fact, as mayor González remarked, this great facility in our municipality will be a space “that will be unique in our community and a benchmark on the Costa del Sol, which will also be located in one of the main areas of expansion of our city, very close to the Cerros del Águila development and the road that connects to the old racecourse.
The growth of this green and sustainable infrastructure will extend, lengthwise, from the cemetery grounds to Cerros del Águila, and in width as far as the vicinity of the Venta de la Morena area known as ‘El Ahogadero’.
With this in mind, councillor Martín pointed out that this grand park is “one of the most ambitious projects that has ever been launched in our municipality, where nature will be the protagonist, sharing space with sport, games, leisure, culture and tourism”. And the fact is that “the seven years of work have finally borne fruit with the launch of this important project which will undoubtedly mark a before and after in Mijas”.
Beginning of the initial phase
The first phase of the project has been awarded to Vías y Construcciones S.A. and TT and EXC Arroyo for 22.6 million euros and a completion period of 18 months.
Apart from the extensive green area itself, the project includes a second phase to build two access bridges which, in addition to improving connections to this area, will combat flooding in the zone.
The architectural style of this area is typical Andalusian with allusions to the donkey taxi, Arab tiles, wrought iron, exposed pilasters, geometric tiles and all those elements that define us. These will be used in fountains, kiosks and, most uniquely, the construction of a pavilion.
Areas for all age groups
For the children, there will be extensive playgrounds, including a number of play areas with water games.
Grandparents also have their place and will have outdoor recreational tables (for chess and cards) as well as the typical petanque area, an open-air amphitheatre where concerts and plays, among other entertainment, can be organised, as well as large gardens and woods, a running track on the perimeter, a cycle and skating lane, a skate park and a climbing wall, among other features.
This recreational area is only a kilometre and a half away from the centre of the town centre, so it will be fully accessible on foot for residents.
