Farewell to face masks in health centres and chemists

  • The measure came into force today following its publication in the Official State Gazette
  • Experts advise, however, that masks should be worn in these areas

The Council of Ministers has declared the end of the COVID-19 health emergency and the elimination of the use of face masks where they were still required

The COVID-19 health emergency has come to an end. With it, Spaniards will be able to say goodbye to masks in areas where their use was still mandatory, such as hospitals and chemists' shops. The Council of Ministers has announced the end of this crisis with the entry into force of the measure today, 5th of July, following its publication in the BOE (Official State Gazette). As the Minister for Health, José Miñones, explained at a press conference, the epidemiological situation has been balanced since November 2022. Thus, the lower virulence of the current variant of the coronavirus and the higher percentage of immunity and vaccination, allows us to put an end to the health crisis situation in Spain. Even so, experts continue to advise the use of masks in healthcare centres, especially for people who present symptoms of respiratory infection in shared spaces.
