One more year this urbanisation in Mijas celebrated its traditional 'fiesta de convivencia'. They call it 'Calahonda Day' and it is a classic event in the summer calendar of Mijas, as there are many residents and tourists who enjoy this event every year. The programme kicked off in the early hours of the morning, as always, with a golf tournament, popular games for the youngest members of the family, a photography competition and, in the evening, the long awaited evening party was held in the pine forest of Calahonda, without a doubt, a wonderful setting.
"Every year we have a party, celebrating Calahonda Day, and it serves to bring people together, because this is an area where there are a lot of foreigners, we congregate here and have a great time. There are activities, live music... something quiet, but the truth is that people enjoy it a lot", commented the president of the Urbanistic Entity for Collaboration (EUC) Sitio de Calahonda, César Contreras.
"And this year is also the 60th anniversary of Sitio de Calahonda, and like every year we have organised games for the children, a raffle, live music and a bar with food and drinks and many residents and also many tourists have come to spend the day and night with us", added Daniela Wenk, in charge of the organisation of events at the EUC Sitio de Calahonda.
Both had a great time at the festival. "The warmth of the people, here the people enjoy it, they enjoy it infinitely and that is very good", commented one of the local residents, Gloria Beatriz Brito, who has been living in this urbanisation for a decade. The organisation is perfect, we are having a great time", added another neighbour, Juan Manuel Velázquez, accompanied by family and neighbours.
Institutional support
Members of the local council also attended the fiesta to support the local residents at this traditional event. "And we are already seeing how successful the party has been, after the pandemic, normality has returned and it really is a success, congratulations to the community of Calahonda because the truth is that seeing this full of people, this moment of coexistence, the truth is that it is very enjoyable", said the PSOE spokesperson in the Mijas Town Hall, Roy Perez.
"We have been enjoying seeing the children with their games, spending time with the elderly and with many neighbours that we see from year to year and it makes you very happy to see them, as many are foreigners who come to spend the summer and hopefully there will continue to be a summer atmosphere of friendship and coexistence", said the spokesperson for the PP in the Mijas Town Hall, Daniel Gómez Teruel. "This is wonderful, and the people are grateful that this celebration is taking place", added Juan Carlos Cuevas, vice-spokesperson for Vox in the Mijas Town Hall.
The group Treading Four provided live music and got everyone out of their seats. There were also numerous companies in Calahonda who did not hesitate to collaborate with this international summer party which, year after year, continues to be very popular.
Golf tournament, a classic
One activity that is never missing from the Calahonda Day activities is the golf tournament that was organised on Saturday the 1st at the La Siesta golf course. Around thirty golf enthusiasts took part in the tournament. "It is one of the activities that we always organise, as we have this wonderful course integrated within our urbanisation, we enjoy it and the neighbours who live here get together", said Contreras moments before the tournament was kicked off.
La Siesta is a 9-hole, par 3 course, and there were two tee-offs per hole, although here, more than the handicap, the important thing was to enjoy a day with friends. "I have come from Granada to participate in this championship that I have been invited to, to spend a good day playing golf, which is what it is always about", said one of the players, Joaquín Romero, who defined himself as "hooked" on this sport, he said, which is also ideal for playing with family and friends.
Another participant, Víctor Líbano, who has been playing golf for 15 years, expressed the same opinion: "I have a couple of friends who invited me to come and play and here I am, I think it's splendid". All in all, it was a great day for lovers of this precision sport on Saturday at La Siesta.
