Yesterday, residents and visitors to La Cala de Mijas experienced some very tense and nervous moments. A large group of police were present around Casares Street, in the heart of the centre of the seaside town. A man had barricaded himself in his house with a firearm. He is the 21 year old, of Spanish nationality and North African origin, who was left paraplegic last October after being shot four times in an urbanisation in Calahonda due to an alleged settling of scores.
According to what has transpired, a relative of the individual reported early in the morning that he had threatened her with the gun. Agents of the Rapid Action Group (GAR) of the Armed Forces went to the house and, on arrival, the man fired at them, hitting one of the Guardia Civil officers in the right foot, who was taken to the Costa del Sol Hospital where, according to health sources, he is now in stable condition. The situation forced the area to be cordoned off and the residents of this pedestrian street to be evacuated.
Finally, following the mediation of the man's lawyer, at around 16:00 hours, he gave himself up and was arrested. Subsequently, due to his condition, he was taken by ambulance to the premises of the Armed Forces.
