he solidarity stands promoted by the Department for Foreigners in Mijas returned on Saturday the 25th to install their stands on the Branch Office square in La Cala. The Mijas Town Hall continues to support this initiative that was born during the pandemic so that the groups could raise resources and continue their great social work.

“These stands provide a lot of help to foreign groups to enable them to raise funds for the social initiatives they carry out that are so important to be able to reach people, as well as animals, that the administration, for different circumstances, cannot reach”, said the councillor for the department, Arancha López (Cs), who attended the day along with the first deputy mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs).

Twice a month until May

About ten groups participate continuously in this initiative, which is held on the last Wednesday and Saturday of the month until May. Soroptimist International Costa del Sol is one of the associations that usually install their solidarity ‘stand’. Its president, Daphne Theunissen, explained, “we are raising money for the soroptimists in Turkey. Ours is a worldwide organization and in Turkey we have 33 associations with 1,000 members and they are also in the earthquake zone, where they are organizing themselves to carry out very local projects”.

The Diabetes Group of the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club also set up its solidarity table on Saturday. Its founder, Anne Bowles, explained that they have monthly meetings and come twice a month to this solidarity initiative. “People come to the meetings to talk to us, explain their problems and we have a nurse who carries out specific tests to detect diabetes”, she added.

In addition to raising funds, the initiative allows them to get to know each other, “It’s perfect because we can also meet the other associations and see what they are doing”, assured Theunissen.
