Work on the widening of the first phase of Camino de Campanales, which includes the creation of a roundabout, has already begun. The works have a completion period of six months and were awarded for 2.1 million euros. This is an action plan that is greatly demanded by the citizens of Mijas, as it will improve road safety and all connections in the area, in addition to avoiding flooding problems.

“Finally we can report the news of the beginning of the works for the widening of Camino de Campanales and the creation of the long-awaited roundabout located between Venta La Morena and Hoyo 19, which will improve traffic and flooding problems in the area. It is a project that has been talked about for many years, and since it was put on the table there have been five different mayors but thanks to the commitment of this government team and the collaboration of the affected neighbours it is now a reality”, recalled the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who stressed that this is an area where there are often traffic accidents, since at the height of Venta La Morena there are dangerous turns and crossings. The mayor visited the works this week  together with the councillor for Infrastructures and Works, José Carlos Martín (Cs), and the councillor for Town Planning, Andrés Ruiz (Cs).

For his part, Martín highlighted that the other reason why work is being carried out on Camino de Campanales is the flooding of the area. “In 2016 these floods occurred and one of the conflictive points was precisely the portholes that are now there, which were clogged and created a dam and, from that point, it was decided to implement a project that would eliminate and minimise the damaging effects of heavy rain”, assured the deputy mayor.

 

The programmed action will, therefore, eliminate the problems of flooding and road safety issues in this first phase of the widening of Camino de Campanales, which runs from Venta la Morena to Calle Doronja, at the height of the talc factory; subsequently, two other phases will be carried out. This first action plan also includes the construction of a roundabout at Venta la Morena, which will connect with the future ‘Gran Parque de la Costa del Sol’ (Grand Park of the Costa del Sol).

 

This roundabout “is going to have up to five branches”, according to the mayor, who added that, in addition, “two more will be enabled which will be closed during the period of execution of the works and later”, but which will serve for future road connections in Las Lagunas.

Councillor Martín explained that the roundabout will improve “traffic flow” and that, with the dual carriageway, it is planned to widen the lane and install crash barriers to allow pedestrian to move along the hard shoulder without any kind of risk”; furthermore, “traffic flow will be improved in general, once the project is completed”.

Expropriation of land

In order to design this project, the Mijas Town Hall has found it necessary to expropriate some land in the surrounding area to secure the works and to make the roads wide, which has meant  an investment of approximately 456,000 euros in 26 affected properties over an area of 11,800 square metres, expropriations that have been agreed by consensus. It has also been necessary to obtain reports from ‘Environment’, as one of the objectives was to avoid flooding, requiring “an important project from a hydraulic point of view”, declared the mayor and the councillor for Infrastructures and Works.

Cuts in traffic

The works will mean that the Camino de Campanales road will be closed to traffic from this week onwards, and drivers will have to take Camino de Coín as an alternative route. The Town Hall recalled that the opening of the road Ampa Las Caracolas will be the alternative to connect with María Zambrano Avenue and relieve traffic on Avenida de Mijas, which is why it was necessary to carry out those works before starting these. This is a plan of action that will affect one of the points of access to the centre of Las Lagunas with the highest density of traffic in Mijas.
