Today, poppies brought colour to the La Cala town hall square, where flowers made by British Legion veterans themselves were on sale. The aim is to raise funds for the fallen soldiers and their families. The Royal British Legion is a British charity founded in 1921 that helps men and women who have served on active duty in the UK Armed Forces and their families. Its emblem is the poppy, a flower that was adopted after the First World War.

It was intended as a peace sign to remember those who have fallen in combat. The traditional red flower pin is worn on the costume during the so-called remembrance period, i.e. from the end of October until 11th November, the date chosen to remember and honour all those who have died in the World's Wars. The Poppy Appeal is held to raise funds for the association during this period.

It is a long-established tradition, and the Mijas Foreigners Department has joined. "For more than ten years, they have been celebrating with us this British tradition of all the British Legion members. We are here to support them in this charity work", said the Councillor in charge of the area, Arancha López (Cs), this morning during this event.

During October and November, the Royal British Legion will set up tables for the Poppy Appeal campaign at the La Cala tenancy (22nd, 26th and 29th October, and 2nd, 5th and 9th November) and at the Calypso street market (20th and 27th October and 3rd and 10th November). Opening hours will be from 10 am to 2 pm.
