Mijas Comunicación has also produced a documentary dedicated to them in collaboration with the municipal department.

Coinciding with Women Writers' Day, the Mijas Town Council's Library Department paid tribute on Monday, 17th October, to twenty local women authors of different genres. For the second year, the municipality wanted to commemorate this date to recognise the work developed by all of them for the second year. Also, to remember that, for centuries, women have been silenced in literature. "I am convinced this recognition is necessary. Although now we do not suffer the discrimination of years ago or suffer it to a lesser extent, we cannot ignore that everything is harder for women," stressed the Councillor responsible for this department, Natalia Martinez (PSOE).

The Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), also present at the tribute, said that the Mijas women writers are an inspiration to new generations and a reference for other women. " I think it is important that the institutions continue to work to give visibility and prominence to women who, despite having the same abilities and intelligence, do not have the same opportunities, which is what it is all about".

The day continued with the screening of the documentary "Mijas with the woman writer", produced by Mijas Comunicación. Some 17 local women authors talk about their contribution to the world of literature. The documentary gives out clear messages. One of them is that achieving something always requires perseverance and effort. "It is not because I am a woman that people will read my work more or less. You have to make yourself known in every way. The problem is we do not have visibility. That is something that also happens to many men", said the writer Isabel Gámez, who also encouraged all "those women who have manuscripts in their drawers to go out, speak out, go to the library and even where their books are to make themselves known".

Young author María Donoso added, "we cut our wings. We keep flying and discovering, be it in literature, film, art, whatever. And if we have a passion, whether men or women, we go on with it.

Finally, the Library Department Councillor thanked the constant collaboration of all the Mijas women writers, "who are always willing to participate in all the events organised by the department". She mentioned, "this type of meeting also helps the authors to share their impressions of their profession and to get to know each other".

Women Writers' Day

National Women Writers' Day has been celebrated in Spain since 2016 to highlight  women's work in literature and to fight against the discrimination they have suffered throughout history. The annual celebration is on the Monday closest to the date of 15th October, 'Saint Theresa of Jesus' feast day, considered a fundamental milestone in women's literature. She compiled an extensive body of prose and poetry in the 16th century.
