Mijas, venue for the event of the Guardia Civil's festivity

Mijas witnessed the celebration of the patron of the Civil Guard, the Virgen del Pilar. This 12th October is historic, as it is the first time that the Guardia Civil Command in the province has organised this event outside the city of Málaga. The programme of activities began on 24th September and was rounded off with a festive day. After a mass at 10 am in the Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mijas Pueblo. At midday, the main event took place in the Avenida Virgen de la Peña. Some 400 people attended as official guests, 280 of whom were authorities from different parts of the province. In addition, there was also a large number of family and friends who wanted to accompany the officers present on this special date, plus neighbours and visitors who came to the area around the Virgen de la Peña Square.

Military Distinctions The authorities presented more than thirty decorations to officers and civilians in the ceremony. Also, There was a tribute paid to two corp officers who served at the Mijas post. José Manuel Pareja, an agent who retired due to a traffic accident, and Andrés Cárdenas as the oldest, 87 years old who was stationed in Mijas from 1971 to 1988. “Different years to now, where at the beginning we didn’t even have a car and had to walk from one place to another”, acknowledged Cárdenas, assuring that “later they let us take our motorbikes although they only gave us three litres of petrol a month”. 
In addition, Ogro, a trained dog that has helped in the seizure of 25 million euros in different operations carried out in the last seven years, also received his award. After the speeches of the sub-delegate of the Government, Javier Salas, the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the head colonel of the provincial command, Roberto Blanes, who presided over the ceremony, tribute was paid to the fallen and the parade came to a close, in which around 130 agents from the motorised, soldiers, Seprona, explosives, mountain, and cynological sections took part.
