Coinciding with the start of the San Fermín festivities, Mijas opened the 'Mijas, al pueblo Navarro' roundabout, one of the two roundabouts built on the Mijas Road, the A-387. From Wednesday 6th, the roundabout's name reminds us of the brotherhood between the people of Navarre and Mijas. The event was attended by the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), the Councillor for Infrastructures, José Carlos Martín (Cs), members of the municipal corporation, and a small representation of Navarrese residents in the municipality.

"With this tribute, we want to certify the special bond that the people of Navarre have had with Mijas for many years. I want to recall those who have been working for a long time to promote Mijas in Navarre. People like Carlos Herrero, his family, and above all, the Navarrese group living on the Costa del Sol and, especially, those who live in Mijas," said the Councillor of Mijas. "Mijas is an open municipality where those of us who were lucky enough to be born here and those who had the good fortune to come to live in our municipality live together in harmony. Together, we have made Mijas what it is today, the third-largest town in the province. We are going to continue working so that Mijas and Navarre continue to grow together", added the Mayor.

"This is a special time for the community of Navarre. Nothing could be better on San Fermín's eve than all these Navarre residents in Mijas sharing their traditions with us and enjoying ours, in turn, in mutual cultural enrichment. They are great supporters of their gastronomy. This also adds to the Mijas hotel and catering offer where we find great restaurants and recipes praised by visitors and tourists," said Martin.

Reactions

The event was attended by residents of Navarre in Mijas, and members of the Mijas corporation, who highlighted the union between the two localities. " The initiative to name a roundabout after the town of Navarra is marvellous, especially considering that there is such a Mijas colony and the fact that since the '80s, the 'javierada' and the 'chupinazo' of San Fermín have already been organised", said the spokesperson for the Municipal Popular Group, Ángel Nozal.

The PSOE Municipal Group spokesperson, Roy Pérez, "Mijas itself has historically been a welcoming town". He said that the naming of the roundabout as 'Mijas, al pueblo Navarro is "a tribute to the brother town" and "a tribute to all those Navarrese who have decided to settle in Mijas, make their lives here and, obviously, also transfer the name of Mijas to their lands".

The emotion of the people from Navarre

On the other hand, the Navarrese Carlos Herrero was "moved" and "proud" of this recognition: "more municipalities should learn from what the people of Mijas have done, who have given a lesson in deeds". Herrero, the owner of the Casa Navarra restaurant, recalled that "tomorrow 7th July, San Fermín, the Mijas Town Hall invites the Mayors of the surrounding area" to celebrate this day, and he "thanked" the Town Council for this gesture towards the people from Navarre. In addition, other family members and Navarrese residents on the Costa del Sol attended the roundabout inauguration, and praised the bond that unites them to Mijas. "They welcomed us very well almost 40 years ago..." recalled Merche Lacunza, who said she felt "very well and very much at home" in the municipality. Her grandson Aitor Herrero was "very excited" about this event because his grandfather, Carlos Herrero, "has had the restaurant for many years" in Mijas. Aitor's sister was one of the little ones taking part in the event, as she and other girls laid a bouquet at the foot of the flag of Navarre.

The roundabout

The name of the roundabout 'Mijas, al pueblo Navarro' was approved in the plenary session on Friday 1st. It is one of the two roundabouts built on the Carretera de Mijas as it passes through the urbanisations of La Loma, Pueblo Don Silverio and Haza del Algarrobo. Previously, the infrastructures were placed to promote a greater traffic flow through the urbanisations of La Loma and Haza del Algarrobo. Also, the infrastructures were solving a historical demand from the residents, who could only turn around at two points on a road that was more than 1,200 metres long, and had no intersections.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Mayor also thanked the La Loma Neighbourhood Association. He explained, it was really them that had fought for the construction of the two new roundabouts on the Mijas road.
