On the first Stockholm Conference, held in 1972, the slogan 'One Earth' was used. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this event, which placed the environment on the global agenda, the United Nations Environment Programme chose the same slogan again because of its symbolic value. Mijas, through the area led by Councillor Arancha López (Cs), joined in this celebration on Saturday, 4th June. "The aim is to give this day visibility, and everyone who passes by is aware of this day celebrated every 5th June. It is essential, we all do our part for its maintenance and conservation," said the Environment Councillor. She highlighted the environmental wealth of our municipality, "as you know, Mijas has mountains, sea, two areas of special conservation protected at European level, and our priority is to protect Mijas natural environment".
Environment organised awareness-raising activities for all ages during this day: recycling gymkhana, cetacean rescue drill, T-shirt recycling, and face painting. "In addition to the information stands, we have also prepared a mural with recycled plastic caps, and we have also taught citizens how to act if they find a dolphin stranded on the shore," said López. The event was entertained by the batukada Barkatum.
Collectives
Groups such as 'Ecologistas en Acción Mijas, Espacio Drang, Mi Moana, Seo Birdlife, Red de Consumo Responsable', Greenpeace and Secemu joined in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day. The Councillor for the Environment thanked everyone for their presence and collaboration on this world day.
"We could not miss this appointment. Ecologists in Action are with a campaign to protect insects that are very important for life globally, since 60% of agriculture needs pollinating insects. It is important that we look at the small and large," said this NGO coordinator, Juan Jesús Alarcón.
For its part, Secemu, the Spanish Association for the Conservation and Study of Bats, explained its objective through Antonio Moret, one of its members: "Its work consists of establishing basic guidelines for action to develop projects for the conservation of bats, such as projects in wind farms, cave bats monitoring, environmental education and dissemination, which is very important".
