Mijas Town Hall carries out clearing work in urbanisations and scattered areas

  • This is a preventive action to avoid fires during the summer
  • Clearing work will cover between 600,000 and 800,000 square metres.

At the end of this work, more than 650,000 square metres will have been undergrowth cleared

Last week, work began clearing the ditches in the La Riviera area. Today, the work continues in Entrerríos. "We are carrying out these works so that in the summer season, all the ditches and areas prone to be a fire source are clean and do not represent any kind of problem for the neighbours of our municipality", said the Parks and Gardens Councillor, Laura Moreno (PSOE).

The Department of Parks and Gardens expects that 650,000 square metres will be cleared, like last year. "This will cover all the urbanisations and suburbs, so that the neighbours are safe," said Moreno. The clearing work is going at a good pace, said the Councillor.  He assured that "an average of 3 linear kilometres is being done every day. Our municipality will be ready as soon as possible before the start of the summer".

These actions are part of an agreement with the concession company of this service to the Town Hall, said Moreno: "We have a contract in force for the area on the river bank,  in El Esparragal, and Los Olivos. These clearing works are part of this improved contract, which are being completed with the clearing works carried out by Renta Básica, which acts in the areas closest to the urban centres to leave everything in the best conditions for the summer season".

To carry out these tasks, the Parks and Gardens Area has four workers equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE) and the necessary tools and machinery to carry out the clearing. In addition to this staff, the groups provided by Renta Básica are responsible for the urban areas.

This work will continue over the next few days in La Atalaya, La Alquería, Calahonda, and Calypso, said Moreno. He added that "action will be taken both, in areas of urbanisation and scattered areas with dry grass ditches that could cause a fire if they are careless". For another season, Mijas is clearing brush, weeds and reeds from public roadsides and municipal plots. The aim is to avoid possible fires in summer when the municipality's climate and natural characteristics are at high risk. Also, to improve the users' pass through these areas and facilitate draining in the case of rain.
