Social Services has set up a telephone number for queries

The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and Social Services Councillor, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), announced on Thursday 24th March, the launch of the Project for Welcoming Ukrainian Families by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration and “La Caixa Foundation”, which will allow the organisation and coordination of a host families network for those displaced by the war in Ukraine. “Families from Mijas interested in welcoming Ukrainian refugees should contact the telephone number 900 67 09 09, which will be operational from Thursday 24th March - yesterday - from 9 am to 10.30 pm from Monday to Sunday. Undoubtely, it is another step towards channelling all the help that selfless people, many Mijas residents, as we know, want to give to the Ukrainian refugees who are already arriving in our municipality,” said the Mijas Mayor, who recalled that “this pilot project is, to date, the only official way to become a host family, which may last between six months and a year. This project to host families from Ukraine will be developed in four Spanish provinces, Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia and Malaga, through the creation of Technical Hosting Offices of the “La Caixa Foundation”. Specifically, three will be set up in the province of Malaga, “which will be responsible for assessing the suitability of the host family, from the number of people they can accommodate, the characteristics of the home or the length of time they can take in. We must bear in mind that, beyond the solidarity of the gesture, being a host family is a responsibility and, therefore, entails a series of obligations”, added Zapico.

Thus, this initiative is in addition to the emergency fostering that is already being applied throughout the country. It should be remembered that Spain was one of the first countries to apply the European Union’s Temporary Protection Directive, simplifying the procedures that allow residence and work permits to be obtained in less than 24 hours. To this end, it has facilitated the care of Ukrainian refugees through four Reception, Care and Referral Centres (CREADE) in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante and Malaga.
Accommodation These reception centres assist people arriving by different means of transport, providing their accommodation or flexible places in nearby locations, subsequently providing them in less than 24 hours with the temporary protection document for a renewable period of one year. In addition to providing them with employment advice and, finally, depending on the places available, they are referred to the spaces in the reception network (unaccompanied minors are referred to the autonomous communities).

Anyone who needs information or help can contact the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) on 951 56 10 71 or 628 61 07 56 (from 7 pm to 7 am). CEAR asks, if possible, that an appointment be made by email at informacion.malaga@cear.es to manage the assistance most appropriately. The Mijas Town Hall Social Services Department has also made available a telephone number to residents on 952 48 63 70 from 9 am to 2 pm.
Official collection points On the other hand, the Town Hall reminded that there are three official collection points for humanitarian aid in the municipality: Cortijo Don Elías in Las Lagunas, from 9 am to 7 pm; in Coin Street 46 in Mijas Pueblo, from 9 am to 2pm; and in La Cala Senior Citizen’s Homes, from 9 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 7 pm. So far, the Mijas people have donated 46 tonnes of food and necessities.
