Originality, colour and fun marked La Cala Carnival

  • Maxi & Juani's Comparsa 'Aquellas Noches de Julio' enlivened the afternoon with their music and Carnival lyrics
  • The rain gave a break and finally, the traditional La Cala Carnival could be celebrated.

The Cala Boulevard was the stage for this celebration, which also included a costume contest

This weekend the rain gave us a break and, at last, the long-awaited Carnival of La Cala de Mijas could be celebrated. After the celebration in Las Lagunas and Mijas Pueblo the previous weeks, the party moved last Saturday to the coastal town, where there was no lack of colour, fun and originality. As in the other towns of the municipality, from the morning onwards, residents and visitors attended a big party in La Cala Boulevard with live entertainment, bouncy castles, a human bubble football game, a pedal go-kart circuit and the traditional fancy dress competition, which undoubtedly surprised everyone with the great participants' creativity.

There were all kinds of costumes in which you could see the dedication and time invested to create them. Among them, we found some like Alessandra and Paula Valencia, who went together thanks to Slinky, the dog from the Toy Story film, or the gondoliers Andrea Wilkenschildt and Ariadna Segura, whose gondola was also included in the costume. In the case of the little ones, we saw babies dressed as strawberries, lightning bolts or divers. We could also see the older ones' costumes, such as the girls dressed as Sesame Street or the neighbour Manuel Jiménez with his prisoner costume. Carnival never ceases to surprise us, and there is no better way to celebrate it than with family and friends, as in the case of the Cervantes family, who explained that "after enjoying the entertainment we will go to the park to continue playing with friends".

Fancy dress competition
The traditional fancy dress competition also took place. A contest in which the jury mainly valued the participants' creativity and originality.  An initiative launched by the Mijas Town Hall, which distributed numerous prizes, including rural house stays, a bicycle, gift vouchers and several Nintendo Switch. "Once again, the originality and work on the costumes show that it's a job very much shared by the parents, who have been working all week so that the children can show off today," explained the Fiestas Councillor, Tamara Vera (PSOE), who took to the stage to present the prizes along with some of the government team members who did not want to miss the event. For his part, the First Deputy Mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), declared that "there is a magnificent atmosphere today. I think many of the costumes we are seeing are at the same level or more than we have seen in both Las Lagunas and Mijas Pueblo. At the end of the day, it's a day to be with the family and to take advantage of it. It has been a long time since we haven't been able to go out on the streets".

After meeting all the participants and their costumes, the prize-giving ceremony began. The first ones were the youngest ones. The winner of the baby category was the diving child. The next prize in the children's category went to the duo formed by the pompero and the bombetas. After finding out the winning couple, it was time to discover the best costume for the youngest children. Fifth place went to the peacock, fourth to the dachshund. Third place went to the unicorn. Second place went to the watering can and, finally, first place went to Inspector Gadget from Mijas.

Once the children's prizes were known, the adults also received their awards. The best group costume went to the participants who were dressed as the Disney Enchantment film. The most original couple costume was also revealed, which in this case went to Elmo and the Cookie Monster. And finally, the adult winner in the adult category was... The Surprises box.

Performance of the comparsa

Once the party was over in the Boulevard, the entertainment continued in the restaurant El Pikoteo, where Maxi & Juani's comparsa 'Aquellas Noches de Julio' livened up the evening with their lyrics and Carnival music. A perfect goodbye to the Carnivals, we were looking forward to after two years.
