The Mijas Town Hall Social Services Department takes stock of the aid programme for people with functional diversity for the year that has just ended. Mijas Town Hall allocated 1,050,000 euros to these aids in 2021. "Nearly 400 families benefited from these, which means an average of 2,700 euros per family," specified the Councillor, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE). " We have gone from 75,000 euros that were handed out, during the PP Government of Ángel Nozal in 2015, to 1,050,000 euros for this aid programme with a PSOE Government with Josele González as Mayor," added the Councillor.
Zapico also explained that in 2021, the Department had to face a "great challenge" ,since last year, two calls were made, "in 2018 the aid could not be given and we had been dragging this aid until 2021". Thus, the Councillor explained, in 2019, the 2018 grants were given. In 2020, those of 2019 "and in 2021 we set ourselves the challenge of issuing two calls, one in 2020, and the other in 2021. Therefore, in 2022 we will be issuing the ordinary call, in its normal time", added Zapico.
In this sense, the Social Services Councillor said from these two previous calls, "we have to thank the Mijas Social Services staff. All of them have been committed to these disability aids. It was a great challenge that we all set ourselves, from the first to the last worker, who proposed to do whatever was necessary to get the two calls for applications and reach the ordinary call for applications".

An Important Aid
The aid programme for people with functional diversity is "important" for the local government, said Zapico. "People who have a family member with functional diversity, sometimes have a high degree of disability and, therefore, a high degree of dependence. It means a lot of expenses for them in specific therapies, which is very difficult for the families to cover".
"For us, families who have a member with a degree of functional diversity or dependency deserve the utmost respect and consideration. They have to make great efforts to meet the needs that the situation requires. Therapies are expensive and daily expenses too, non to speak about time. Some people have to stop working to care for their relatives or work for fewer hours, which means they earn less money. That's why we think this aid is so important, it is necessary to compensate in some way, for these situations and all these special needs.
New ordinance
Finally, Zapico recalled that Social Services worked in 2021, to solve "some deficiencies" that existed in the ordinances. "We have introduced some improvements in a new ordinance, which was approved in 2021 and will come into force in 2022. So, the new 2022 call for applications will be ruled by the new ordinance, which is already published and approved. "I would also like to say that this new ordinance has been agreed with Adimi, the main association dedicated to people with functional diversity. We discussed the new developments with them. We had their opinions and from that consensus came the new ordinance," said the Councillor.
Zapico hopes that in 2022, these aids "will reach those who need it most" and echoed the words of a mother of a seven-year-old girl with functional diversity, who said that "these aids enable us to give her a better quality of life and bring a smile to her face every day, she is extremely happy, very sociable and more expressive". "Our greatest reward," said the Councillor, "is her smile".
