Officers from the intervention group (Charlie) and the plainclothes unit (SIMA) of the Mijas Local Police observed on Christmas Eve while patrolling several young people both in El Esparragal Park and the area of Las Cañadas using the pyrotechnics on the public highway.

The police officers informed them that they should immediately stop throwing firecrackers and drew up several reports of proposed sanctions for non-compliance with the ordinance of coexistence and public safety.

The Town Council reports that it has encouraged the control of pyrotechnics in response to neighbourhood demands at this time of year.

Awareness campaign

The awareness campaign, 'For a Christmas without Pyrotechnics', has been launched, too. It seeks to raise public awareness of the importance of not using pyrotechnics. It seriously affects animals causing fear, anxiety, panic attacks or hearing loss. The Local Police remind us that the pyrotechnics used on public roads is an offence. The penalties range from 750 to 1,500 euros.
