The new secondary school which has already begun to be built in Las Lagunas, will be, according to the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, "a reference in Andalusia and Spain in educational infrastructures' '. This Friday, the first stone was laid for this infrastructure, which has been in great demand in the city and which will allow the demand for secondary school places to be adjusted to population growth. The ceremony was attended by Moreno, the Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), the Regional Minister for Sports and Education, Javier Imbroda, and the Delegate of the Government of Andalusia in Malaga, Patricia Navarro (PP), who were accompanied by the Delegate of Education in Malaga, Mercedes García Paiene (Cs), Mercedes García Paiene (Cs) together with representatives of the government team, including the first Deputy Mayor of the municipality, José Carlos Martín (Cs) and the Councillor for Education, Mariló Olmedo (Cs) and the rest of the municipal corporation.
The new centre is already being built on a plot of 7,358 square metres located next to the Indira Gandhi school and will have a D6 category, i.e. 6 lines, which means 720 new school places. The investment amounts to 5.5 million euros with a completion period of 18 months and the company awarded the works is Lirola Ingeniería y Obras S.L.
Mijas, highlighted Moreno, "is one of the municipalities in Malaga and Andalusia in which the Junta de Andalucía has invested in infrastructure the most. We have just started the countdown to build this impressive and imposing school in which we have invested almost 6 million euros. This investment, in a centre, is unusual in the infrastructure policy of Andalusia, or any other autonomous community". Specifically, said Imbroda, "20 million euros have been allocated to educational infrastructures in this city, in which there are 17 projects already underway and 200 projects in the province of Málaga to the value of 250 million euros, so the commitment to education is clear".
The Mayor of Mijas highlighted the need for this centre given "the exponential growth of Mijas, which requires more educational facilities, so I hope that we make an alliance, we make an effort so that the pressure of schooling that is now being transferred to another population centre, La Cala de Mijas, is relieved; Now, we all have to make an effort so that a new school becomes a reality as soon as possible there, so that this new school and these planned extensions to the IES (Secondary Education Institute) in La Cala, inaugurated in 2007, become a reality as soon as possible; I am convinced that with the work and institutional loyalty that this Council has always had with the Junta de Andalucía, regardless of who is in government, we will achieve it; we are confident in this".
A modern centre
The new school will have, according to the general director of the Public Education Agency, Manuel Cortés, in the teaching area, 24 multi-purpose secondary classrooms, a library, a gymnasium with changing rooms, two music classrooms, two art classrooms and two workshop classrooms, two laboratories, ten departments and six classrooms for extra-curricular activities and pedagogical reinforcement. There will also be a special education classroom with its corresponding specially adapted toilet.
The administration area will house the secretary's office and archive, the caretaker's office and reprographics, the teachers' room, the headmaster offices, secretary, guidance and head of studies, the parents' association offices and for the students themselves. The centre will also have a cafeteria, storage for resources, cleaning room, toilets and changing rooms for non-teaching staff, facilities rooms, etc.
Outside the centre, two multi-sports courts, a playground, a school garden, covered porches and landscaped areas will be built. There will also be a parking area for the teaching staff.
The centre will have photovoltaic solar panels for the production of electrical energy, in line with the objective of achieving more sustainable educational buildings and reducing their energy costs.

"Mijas has a great educational need", explained Olmedo, who added, "from here, we would like to thank all the actions that are being carried out to solve the schooling problem we have in the municipality and dedicate this day, of course, to the children, the AMPAs, the directors and the entire educational community, in general, and to all the people who have done their bit in this fight to make this a reality".
From the PSOE, they asked to speed up the execution of the projects of La Cala and the deadline for this centre, which is expected to open its doors in the 2023-2024 school year. "It has 18 months of construction, which we hope can be brought forward, and now we must keep on fighting for the situation of La Cala, which is worrying, and has been for a long time. It is necessary that all the resources and efforts of both the municipality and the Regional Ministry of Education, which is responsible for this matter, are put into action", added the Councillor of the PSOE Municipal Group, Hipólito Zapico.
The Popular Party does not forget the educational community of La Cala and congratulates the educational community of Las Lagunas and its students. The Councillor of the Municipal Group PP in Mijas Town Hall, Carmen Márquez, did not want to forget the residents of La Cala and urbanisations, "who have been waiting for all these actions to be carried out, which have had the commitment, of the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, today. From here, I would like to congratulate and congratulate the entire Mijas educational team, especially the directors and the AMPAS for their patience and commitment," he added.
The ceremony of the laying of the first stone was also attended by the management teams of the Mijas schools and representatives of the AMPAs. They all celebrated this day, and what it means: "We are happy because this school was much needed, there are students who will finish their school year in prefabricated classrooms and that is always negative, but we must have hope for the future," added the President of the Regional Federation of AMPAS of the Costa del Sol, Miguel Gallardo, who also wanted to thank "above all, the government and the Mayor because we all have to row together.
