It is planting time, this is the most favourable time of the year to replant our countryside and even more in areas that were unfortunately affected by fires. Every December 11th, is World Mountain Day, and in Mijas we celebrate this event by planting trees. "We are back in this area, we were here a few days ago and today, we are here again, with the collaboration of the volunteers, we are going to plant a hundred seedlings of native species to this area to move forward after suffering a fire a few years ago," said the Councillor for the Environment of Mijas Town Hall, Arancha López (Cs).
The area chosen for reforestation last Saturday, was the Cañada del Nacimiento, affected by the 2012 fire. "We are trying to recover and improve the area, above all, taking into account that there is a good natural regeneration and what we are doing is introducing native species such as cork oak, wild olive and carob trees", added Francis Pérez, a technician from the Environment Department.
And for the activity to be complete, after the planting, irrigation was carried out.
"We have also prepared a bucket of water for irrigation to help the trees to take hold, as the rains have been very scarce for the season. In this way, we are doing a complete activity so that the species can survive," explained López.
As it is an activity aimed at all ages, there are many children who participate in this activity, as is the case of Javier Sahuquillo, a young man who was delighted with the idea, as he told us, "my father had the idea, but I also wanted to, as when I was little I liked planting a lot and we used to take plants and plant them at home". Javier sends a fundamental message about the importance of this action: "without trees there is no oxygen".
Anyone interested in participating in this type of activity need only contact the Environment Department or follow the department's social networks (medioambiente@mijas.es).
