The modification of the PGOU to act on the Islas Marianas roundabout is approved

The motion received the favourable vote of the entire municipal corporation

The municipal corporation has approved the modification of the General Plan for Urban Development as the last step to remodel the entrance to Las Lagunas through the Islas Marianas roundabout.

According to the Town Planning councillor at the Mijas Local Council, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), this action will reduce the traffic jams in the area and “will consist of modifying the road design of the connection junction, incorporating new branches and expanding the existing roundabout”.

The project will also affect a green area that, Ruiz stressed, “will not be lost but will be relocated to another area in the surroundings, even increasing its size”.

A modification at the height of the water park is also included, where a direct access will be created to reduce traffic on the roundabout. “We already have favourable reports from Public Works, the Advisory Council, the Environment, etc., and it is something that makes us happy because we believe that this remodeling will improve road safety in this link and increase the absorption capacity of existing traffic”, stated the councillor.

The motion had the favourable vote of the entire corporation, except for the non-attached councillor, Esperanza Jiménez, who abstained, arguing that the main source of the retentions is the tunnel  under the A-7 highway. For this reason, she proposed to “urge the central administration to intervene and widen the tunnel through a plenary motion”.

In this regard, the person in charge of Town Planning answered that “it is true that under the bridge the road is narrow and this may cause some retentions, but the main problem is detected in the accesses from the highway, both from Malaga and Marbella, and this is corroborated by the feasibility reports that we have drawn up and that have been required of us at the state level”. The project for the execution of this work, Ruiz concluded, is already under development in the absence of its approval.
