Parks and Gardens intensifies the fumigation of palm trees in the public domain

  • The phytosanitary treatments that are applied do not harm humans or pet
  • The fumigation plan against the red palm weevil includes the periodic application of phytosanitary treatments.

These prevention tasks are carried out to stop the spread of the red palm weevil, a very harmful invasive insect in these types of trees

Facing the arrival of summer, the Department for Parks and Gardens has intensified the tasks of spraying the palm trees in the public domain to prevent the spread of the red palm weevil, an invasive insect that is very harmful for palms.

As explained this week by the councillor for Parks and Gardens, Laura Moreno (PSOE), the fumigation plan against the red weevil includes the periodic application of specific phytosanitary treatments that are not harmful to humans or pets. Having said this, fumigations are carried out during the less crowded hours in order to avoid discomfort, especially to those people who suffer from some type of allergy or sensitivity. "We have around three thousand palm trees throughout the public areas of Mijas and I think it is essential that the Local Council carry out these preventive measures to preserve them, because many are quite old", Moreno recalled.

The councillor also indicated that the Department for Parks and Gardens has a team of professionals dedicated exclusively to prevention and fumigation tasks, not only to prevent the spread of the red weevil, but also of other invasive pests such as processionary caterpillars, the mealybug or rust. "In the case of the red weevil, we spray every month and a half, with special emphasis placed on the spring and summer months", she pointed out.

Likewise, Moreno has asked for responsibility and collaboration from all those residents who have palm trees in their gardens and properties, "to prevent this insect from spreading to other palm trees in the municipality and damaging other species". In this regard, the councillor concluded: "The Department for Parks and Gardens is available to resolve all consultations about the procedures that must be followed when citizens fumigate their palm trees, or regarding the best time of year to do so".
